I'm not going to write full reports anymore, simply because they're too consuming and, to be completely honest, not very interesting. From now on, I'll just post the Deck I played, along with my record and any notes, in the Deck Discussion Forum. Okay, so Steve gave me a lift today, and all on the way we were talking about the pathetic turnout we had at the last Qualifier and how bad it would be if we had the same kind of thing again. We did; only a grand total of nine people showed up. Although, I will say that almost everybody was at least decent, and five of us were good enough to make it a comparatively exciting tournament. I played a kid in the first round, thrashed him easily (he summoned V-Tiger Jet, and it just went down hill from there), and then played Benny in the second round, who was playing Sams. We had two close games, but he pulled it out in the end. I played Kevin in the third round, who was playing GBs, and I beat him quite easily. I played Dave in the last round, who was playing Chaos, and I beat him, too. 3-1 in Swiss with a rogue deck surprised even me, let alone everybody else, and I made the Top 4 cut.

I played Benny again in the first round of Top 4, and was a little disheartened after having been beaten by him in Swiss. However, I played flawlessly, thinking, double-thinking and even triple-thinking every single move, and I beat him to move onto the finals. Guess who I played in the finals? Steve! I opened rubbish in both games, though, the worst I had opened all day (hands like double Diva and Spy with Descendant, things like that), and he just swamed me with Sams to take the tournament. Damn it. I also burnt my tongue on my Subway.

Anyway, I managed to get three Rare Skill Drains for $10, which I'm really happy about since I'm thinking Skill Drain is a eally good Metagame call this format, and I pulled a Genex Ally Duradark from my prize packs, if that's any good (I haven't looked it up on eBay yet).

So, that's all. The deck is really good, probably the best deck I've played in a long time, and I can't really believe Ive never tried it before (anybody who knows me well enough knows I love my DARK decks). The only thing I would do, however, is take out the Upstart Goblins for three more tech cards. I don't like Upstart in Advanced Format, because Advanced is all about stability instead of speed. I would most likely also Main Doom Lord - he's awesome against Sams... and I have a DR04 Rare copy.

For anybody that doesn't know, I'm coming over for the Win-A-Box next Sunday, and I will also be doing full Event Coverage. If anybody wants to volunteer to take notes of their good matches for me, PM me with what you are playing and I will consider it. I will be posting the coverage on not only my blog but the Pojo Tournament Report Forum as well, in the hope that I can get more people interested in Traditional Format. Since the coverage has this promotional aspect as well, I can only feature good Traditional Format decks, so please make sure that if you want to be featured you play something that falls into this category. Mikal, if you are playing your Darklords, I kindly request that you will consent to be one of my note-takers, please? I will obviously be taking these notes myself, and I will ask any other good player that turns up to do so, as well.

On that note, it's time for me to leave; this post turned out much longer than I thought it would. If anything interesting happened this weekend or the last (I still haven't heard how the last Traditional Format Win-A-Box went, yet), I'd love to hear it. Not being there sucks, but you need to go where the work is. That's life - it sucks, and then you die.

-Jamie

P.S. Nobody ever asks me any questions about the decks I post. If anybody wants to know why I included a certain card, or why I omitted one, or why I didn't play more copies of something, I'm only too happy to answer.

2 Gaia is because the Deck can easily make Level 6 Synchros. It's better than having to use Brionac earlier than required.
Reese is basically the 4th Target for Diva. It's a Level 2 Tuner.

Congrats on 2nd man. I wonder if it would have been different if we showed up Razz

Neo: exactly what Nick said. With the central Synchro engine being made up of Level 2 Tuners (Diva and Reese) and Level 4 Non-Tuners (Gravekeeper's), the deck will Summon Level 6 Synchros most often. Unfortunately, DivaDAD lost Goyo Guardian, but I thought that with Sams being so big this format (and over here especially), an easily summoned 2600 Monster would be a good metagame call. Happily, I was correct. Two copies is essential, since the deck can summon two in one turn.

Also, Reese the Ice Mistress is a Level 2, Sea-Serpent Tuner that cannot be destroyed by battle with Level 4 or higher Monsters: it's a target for the third Diva which, as opposed to Mermaid Archer or Spined Gillman, is not a dead draw in and of itself.

Nick: thanks. It would be interesting, but as I said in the OP, the deck is really surprisingly good. It summons big Synchros out of nowhere, and is often quite unpredictable. It's also quite well metagamed against Sams, due to the fact that the whole engine is Monster-based.

Thats true. Have you considered Gorz or Tragoedia?

Tragoedia more or less because of it's ability to alter levels and then provide a Tribute target for Caius or a Synchro candidate.

Also, Gale the Whirlwind might be nice in here. Allows for easy Arcanite Magician's and is argubably one of the better Tuner's going around...

Nick: I had Gorz in the Side, because it isn't really that good against every match-up, but I would prbably prefer to Main it in future. As for Trag, I've never really been a huge fan of the card; it relies too much on having something to do with it, which won't always be the case. Gale, on the other hand, is an interesting idea, and one which I didn't even consider owing to the fact that I don't have one anymore. You have me thinking now, though, and the card definitely warrants testing.

Mikal: awesome, thanks. You can borrow my DLZs if you can't get Mark's. And no, I won't be coming to South - I'm arriving on Saturday night, so I can't make it.

I only opted for Tragoedia for it's ability to change into any Level you need. i.e 4, 6 or 3 to basically allow extra Synchro capacity.

Spose it's not for everyone though. But Gale is something you should definitely try. Not to mention it's possibly one of the most all purpose cards going around.

For the upstarts you could play 3 Ally Genex Birdman. It does wonders with GK Spy and lets you use deep sea diva twice and spy twice.
